Vermicompost – Make at Home

Organic Farming or Gardening requires feeding the plants with essential nutrients. Vermicompost is one of the organic manures/fertilizer which has rich nutrient that can very easily prepared at our home or backyard or in farm.

Vermicompost is a product of decomposition done by worms from the organic wastes and vegetable or food wastes. Worms enhances the decomposing process much faster and the manure is ready in 30 to 40 days or even earlier based on the climatic conditions.

In this post let us see the process and procedure of making vermicompost at home or backyard. Nowadays you can get vermibags from market, there are lot of companies who produce these bags that are UV protected with ISI standard which can be used to produce vermicompost at any scale (personal or commercial). I used one such bag for my produce. This bag comes in various sizes, the regular size is 10 or 12 * 3 * 3 ft.

Step 1:
Prepare the space for installing the vermibag in a shady place. Install few wooden sticks which will hold the bag upright and easy to handle. Add 5 to 6 cm layer of decomposed organic material as a bedding. Materials used for bedding can be dried/decomposed cow manures or any organic waste items. Supply adequate water if the bed is too dry.

Step 2:
Add 2 to 3 cm of cut out grass or green leaves ro dry leaves for rich nitrogen content for the composting.

Step 3:
Add the earth worms to the bed now and cover it with 2 to 3 cm of organic bedding material or wet shredded newspapers again. This is to avoid exposing worms to direct sunlight or heat and keep the bed moist. Worms work well in a dark, moist and in temperatures between 15 to 35 degree Celsius.

Step 4:
Keep the bed moist all the time by adding sufficient water at regular intervals based on the moisture content in the bed. Worms will start their work (decomposing) immediately. You can start harvesting the organic rich nutrient fertilizer as early as within few weeks if you have smaller bed or between 30 to 45 days for larger beds.

Earthworms often referred to “Farmers Friend” reproduces at much faster rate which will leave you one less task to make sure your farm has enough worms through the year for producing vermicompost. Vermicompost can be used for almost all the plants in your garden, horticulure or agricultural lands. As you can see how easy and cost effective is to prepare this organic vermicompost, why do we need to buy inorganic or costly fertilizers from marketplace.

Good luck with your composting !!!
