Coconut Tree: How to Grow and Benefits

Coconuts are known for their versatility ranging from food to cosmetics products. Interestingly, mentions of coconut dates way back in Sindbad’s stories. lol

In this post I am going to explain how to grow a coconut plant from a fresh coconut.

Step 1: Germination

Begin with a fresh coconut that still has the husk on it. Soak it in water for two to three days. Place the soaked coconut in a container filled with well-draining potting soil. The container needs to be around 10 to 12 inches deep to allow for the roots to grow properly. Plant the coconut point side down and leave one-third of the coconut above the soil.

Keep the coconut well watered during germination. Water the coconut frequently but make sure the container drains very well. You should see the seedling appear in three to six months.

Step 2: Planting

In order to have a proper growth of coconut plant, dig out a pit of 2*2 ft hole on the ground. Southern states in India has different plantation pit size depending upon the area. In Tamil Nadu its 3*3 ft, in Kerala its 1*1*1 m depending on the type of soil. I have a made pit of 2*2 ft in my area.

Introduce a layer of compost/vermicompost or any organic fertilizer to the pit. Some use salt at the lateral surface to improve physical condition of soil. Plant the seedling inside this pit and firmly press the soil and create a space arond the plant for watering. Planting coconut in the month of May is an ideal time with the onset of pre monsoon rain. Coconuts responds well to regular irrigation and manuring.

Step 3: Harvest

Life of a coconut is around 65 years and it beings to bear in around 8 to 10 years from the time you planted. This is for the normal tall variety coconut trees. I have planted a short variety yellow coconut which can bear in about 5 years.

Coconut is a high in fiber fruit and has a wide range of nutrient content (Fat, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin C, B-6, B-12, Carb and lot more). A Very good thirst quencher during summer. There are lot of hybrid and inorganic produce in market for business purpose. Let’s try to produce our own coconut in whatever space we have at our place (short or dwarf varieties) and consume organically produced coconut, live healthy and save nature by planting these trees.

Happy Growing !!
